About the Cannabis Program
Shortly after California voters approved Proposition 64 – the legislation that legalized marijuana – in 2016, The Campbell Foundation began supporting partners engaged in implementing the measure. Today, we remain committed to advancing an equitable and environmentally-compliant cannabis industry through our grants.
Our support of a thriving cannabis industry underscores the importance of this legal agricultural product, both culturally and economically. Legacy growers and new ventures alike deserve a smoother path toward the promise of Proposition 64, which would leverage revenue from the cannabis industry to fund youth programs, substance abuse prevention and treatment, environmental restoration, and public health initiatives, among other benefits for the public.
Despite setbacks and challenges to Proposition 64’s implementation, the Foundation continues to fund a steady stream of programs to help drive its ultimate success. These include the creation of technical assistance programs for cannabis cultivators, communications and outreach on best practices for cultivation, research on the cannabis industry and its impacts, and the creation of policy guidance to support a more successful and compliant industry. We also fund work that reduces illegal cannabis grow sites on public lands.
Additionally, the Foundation helps enable collaboration between the cannabis industry and environmental advocacy groups so they can approach decisionmakers together, helping to holistically inform policy and increase participation in state cannabis licensing and environmental requirements.
