Position Overview

The Fellow, Community Engagement will work closely with Kenneth Turner, Program Director, Community Engagement, Chesapeake and other members of staff to advance the Foundation’s CommunityEngagement Program, which was created in 2024. Primary tasks range from exploring prospective grantee organizations to the review, analysis, and presentation of funding requests. The Fellow will actively engage with community stakeholders (e.g., nonprofit leaders, community residents, teachers) and funding partners, in consultation with the Program Director, Community Engagement, to manage, shape, and continually update the Community Engagement grants portfolio. The Fellow will help advance the Foundation’s mission of creating more equitable and livable communities by working with partners in the Chesapeake to address systemic inequities and immediate needs.

The successful candidate has a passion for supporting community needs and nonprofit organizations on issues including but not limited to workforce development, education, immigration, community health, and community justice. The candidate should be able to demonstrate this passion and interest through past experiences (i.e., relevant volunteer experience, professional experience, lived experience).

The Campbell Foundation Fellowship provides a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in private philanthropy as a grant maker, while helping to create new community programs throughout the Chesapeake region in Pennsylvania and Maryland. The Fellow will participate in grant and partnership discussions with the Program Director, Community Engagement to build a solid understanding of the portfolio and the grantmaking process. The Fellow will also have a chance to develop new professional skills and experiences by leading workstreams, partnerships, and pilot programs.

This is a one-to-two-year position.

Community Engagement is a new program within the Foundation, so the ideal candidate is comfortable operating in uncharted territory where the path forward is not fully defined. Additionally, the candidate is good at taking direction and following current procedures, but also curious and willing to make suggestions for improvement. They are not afraid to ask for help or clarification, and can also integrate feedback, even at a rapid pace.

There are tools in place that will help this candidate be successful, including:

  • A collection of well-developed systems to manage the operations of the Foundation
  • Regular and frequent meetings with the Program Directors and other team members
  • A thorough onboarding/training process
  • A first-six-months, and then annual, employee review
  • Professional development and mentoring opportunities

*If candidates advance to these stages, they will be compensated at a standard rate of $20 per hour for time spent on submitting materials and participating in hiring process requirements.

Primary Job Duties, Roles and Responsibilities

Deepen Partnerships

  • Through research, deepen Foundation’s knowledge of Community Engagement topics and emerging trends in Lancaster, PA, York, PA, and Maryland’s Eastern Shore.
  • Support Program Director, Community Engagement to identify grantee partners for the Community Engagement Program in Pennsylvania and Maryland through desktop research, and participation in community events and conferences.
  • Share findings at staff meetings aligned with the Foundation’s Community Engagement priorities
  • Develop strong and constructive working relationships with stakeholders and partners
  • Assist with convening of meetings and workshops in cooperation with grantees and other funders as necessary

Support Pilot Programs

  • Co-create and launch a participatory grantmaking program in Pennsylvania or Maryland working with the Program Director, Community Engagement. The pilot program is intended to empower community members to direct Foundation grant funding to needs and priorities they identify.

Professional Development

  • Learn about philanthropic grantmaking by participating in meetings, events, and site visits with the Program Director, Community Engagement
  • Seek out professional development opportunities that will also strategically shape the Foundation’s work

Manage Grants

  • Review and evaluate grant proposals and supporting documentation, and assist with follow‐up communications to request additional information when needed
  • Draft grant and project summaries to be used internally and externally
  • Support Program Director, Community Engagement in onboarding new grantees

Background/Experience (Preferred)
Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field (e.g., nonprofit management, civic engagement, business, public policy)

Technical Skills (Preferred)

  • Able to function well in a paperless environment
  • Mac/iOS fluency
  • Strong experience and comfort learning and using a wide variety of software, including, for example:
    • Salesforce or other database/CRM software
    • Microsoft Office Suite for Mac, with emphasis on Outlook

Abilities (Preferred)

  • Solid skills and interest in researching topics, working with databases, and collecting and synthesizing quantitative and qualitative information
  • Specific interest and experience in community outreach, development and engagement
  • Actively manages competing priorities to balance responsibilities and complete assignments in a timely fashion
  • Responsive, concise written and verbal communication style
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interface with a wide variety of stakeholders
