Dear Colleagues,

The Campbell Foundation would like to announce that Alex Echols has graciously accepted the position of Program Director, Agriculture at the Keith Campbell Foundation for the Environment. Alex has experience in the agricultural sector, philanthropy, conservation and government.

Prior to joining the Foundation, Alex ran an independent business to help advance conservation outcomes, particularly in water quality and biodiversity.  He also built a company, Ecosystem Services Exchange, that improves farm profitability and water quality.  Previously Alex ran the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, worked as the government affairs director of a recycling trade association and worked for the U.S. Senate for 12 years.  While working for the Senate, Alex was the principal staff lead in developing the Conservation Title of the Farm Bill.

Alex grew up on The New Farm(1780) in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. Living there and in Latin America he witnessed how conservation and economic opportunity go hand in hand.  Alex’s undergraduate degree is in interdisciplinary studies with a focus in environmental science.  He has a masters of planning from Texas A&M University.

Alex travels extensively with his wife and daughter. He is an avid boater, fisherman and hunter.

As the new Director for our Agriculture Program, Alex will provide strategic program oversight and conduct grantmaking within our interest areas at the Campbell Foundation. We are thrilled that Alex will bring his years of experience to our organization, and contribute to a positive shift in the dynamic between agricultural interests and the needs of nature, as both are necessary in providing for people.

Alex was selected from a pool of more than 80 exceptionally qualified candidates.

I am delighted with the hire of Alex and all that he will add to the Campbell Foundation as we near the start of our third decade of work in the Chesapeake Bay watershed.  As we continue our commitment to support watershed stewardship, we look forward to new excitement as Alex joins our effort.

Alex’s first day with the Foundation will be Monday, January 7, and I hope you will join me in welcoming him to the Chesapeake Bay community. If you would like to contact Alex, his email address is aechols@campbellfoundation.org.

With continued gratitude,

Samantha Campbell
President
