Program Director, Agricuture

The Keith Campbell Foundation for the Environment’s Chesapeake Initiative is seeking a talented and experienced Program Director, Agriculture Program.

This position plays a key role in the evolution and implementation of the Agriculture Program in the Chesapeake Bay watershed, especially in Lancaster and Delmarva, and focuses on creating common ground between highly diverse stakeholders such as our grantees, business interests, farmers, decision-makers and the community at large.

The Agriculture Program currently seeks to support projects such as:

  • The founding and evolution of 360° stakeholder driven, consensus-based, problem-solving groups
  • Leveraging of emerging consumer preferences and supply chain mechanisms
  • Development of, and trials for promising new technologies and methods that help to support on-farm performance while enabling changes that yield environmental benefits

We are seeking candidates that have worked in agriculture and have extensive knowledge around supply chain/market forces, agricultural practices and regulations, and all levels of farmer networks and organizations.

The Program Director, Agriculture will report directly to the President and will collaborate with the Directors of other Programs under the Chesapeake Initiative.  This position is based in Annapolis, MD.

Key Responsibilities

Program Management

  • Lead the operational implementation and advance multi-year objectives of the Agriculture Program.
  • Actively develop, evaluate and report on strategic relationships and opportunities in a timely fashion to the President to solicit perspectives and direction
  • Work with fellow Program Directors to effectively communicate, monitor and evaluate progress on the strategic plan
  • Develop and utilize forward-looking models and program assessments to properly evaluate resource allocation via the Chesapeake Program Budget
  • Maintain an awareness of emerging issues, polices, programs, and organizations that may improve the Foundation’s ability to carry out its mission, and propose potential strategic and tactical adjustments
  • Foster a thoughtful integration between the work of grantees, stakeholders and the Campbell Foundation;
  • Communicate frequently in an organized fashion about ongoing projects

Grants Management

  • Review grant requests and reports, including financials, and perform due diligence in preparation for creating grant documents
  • Communicate with grantees to clarify any issues
  • Concisely present and discuss grants with President on a monthly basis
  • Develop and assess new grants to fill gaps in strategic plan implementation
  • Build capacity in the leadership and organization of the Program grantees
  • Partner with staff to effectively utilize Foundation Connect to track grants, spending, and outcomes/metrics

Staff Management

  • Hire and supervise a highly motivated and effective two-year Fellow
  • Regularly evaluate talent and capabilities of staff and fellows to ensure that resources and developmental tools are effectively enhancing performance, productivity and capabilities
  • Oversee and ensure effective operations of the office administration and of the Executive Assistant (Shared)

Background/Experience Preferred

  • At least 5 years of experience in managing a program with a mission of sustained environmental focus with multiple, diverse stakeholders, with 3+ years in an executive position such as Vice President or Program Director
  • Proven track record in developing, and managing direct reports to improve their productivity and capabilities
  • Bachelor’s Degree or Masters in relevant field

  • Ability to absorb new information quickly and include it in effective implementation adjustments

  • Data-based decision-maker who combines analysis, wisdom, experience and judgment, with a focus on evaluating objectives, learning,  and sharing knowledge with others
  • Participatory in decision-making; proactive and mindful
  • Strong skills in independent research as required to assess complex issues
  • An engaging leader with exceptional interpersonal and participatory influencing skills to interact with staff, President, conservation community and grantees as well other partners with differing perspectives and interest;
  • Strong ability to translate strategy into day-to-day planning;
  • Highly effective in written and oral communication;
  • Excellent leadership, active listening and facilitation skills;
  • Ability to be flexible and find the right balance between annual objectives, the organization’s long term mission and the diversity of grantees;
  • An enthusiastic adopter of new technology and innovative tools and comfortable working in a cloud-based, paperless environment
  • Excellent computer literacy, both Mac and PC, especially with Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Acrobat.  Familiarity with Foundation Connect or other grants management databases a plus.
